The cat was said to be the embodiment of Bastet on Earth, and they were worshiped in her temples. Upon their deaths, they would be mummified and given to her as an offering. The animal was so sacred that killing one was a crime punishable by death.
Because of the cat’s ability to see in the dark, she was one of the only Egyptian gods to enjoy the distinction of being both a sun and moon goddess.
