SU XIAOBAI

I’ve noticed that you seem to use St. John’s Wort pretty regularly. Do you have a strong relationship with the plant? Is it regularly available to you? Or have you just found it to be particularly effective? I’ve only ever really used it medicinally myself and don’t know much about it magickally. I’m always interested in plant that witches seem to favor.

I do. I use my own homemade Saint John’s Wort oil for basically everything, all forms of anointing, drawing sigils, protection, banishing and exorcising. I actually don’t utilize any other oils. It’s the plant I’ve been using the longest in my practice and it’s definitely one of my most used. It grows wild where I live and I gather it around midsummer, as is tradition.

Above everything, Saint John’s Wort is a protection herb, sacred to the sun and the summer months. It’ll keep bad things away. Medieval Christians considered it sacred to Saint John since it bloomed near his feast day (hence, obviously, the name) and the red oil it produces has historically been called “the blood of Christ”. Imbued with these properties, it was believed to repel all sorts of evil and malicious spirits, the evil eye, curses and so on. I have satchels of it hanging over my doors and windows and occasionally add it to banishing incenses or sprinkle dried leaves over food. It’s definitely one of my favourite plants in witchcraft.

Just because you’re angry doesn’t mean you have the right to be cruel.
